The Day I Begged for a Rat

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Today I'm linking up to tell you a random story from my past for the "Just Because" link up with Lisette.

When I was in the 4th grade our classroom had two class pets. They were two rats named Swoosh and Nike. They were super tame and cuddly and calm. I got the idea in my head that I wanted one more than anything. I begged and begged my parents for one. My mom could not stand the thought of it and said no. One morning my dad pulled me aside and said he was taking me to the pet store to get a rat. We picked one out and got all the necessary goodies for it.
Seriously, whats up with the mouse fetish?

I had fun with it for about a day until I realized it was actually pretty ugly, scary, and not fun at all. The first time I let it out of its cage it ran rampant around the house until we finally caught it. From the day it was named "Speedy." I was terrified of it from that point on. My mom made me clean it's cage, replace it's food and water until the day he died. I feel awful saying this but I was so relieved when that day finally came. He kept growing larger and larger and half of his body swelled up like a balloon. He ended up dying choking on a peanut because of his huge swollen tumor-y body. Poor thing.

I can only pray to the heavens that my children never beg me for a gross hairy little rodent. Sorry mom and dad!!

  3. i had a friend that had a rat named Chloe. it's tail was the most vile thing i had ever seen and i found myself constantly wanting to judge her for owning it. she cuddled Chloe all the time and kept her cage on her bedside table. it was one of the weirder/creepier things i had ever witnessed. i hate rats. and i'm glad you came to realize that they're terrifying. :) but we all have our things. i had like 5 hamsters growing up. they all died weird and tragic deaths.

  10. I had two guinea pigs that were actually products of our class pets. I loved them for about a week and then hated them until they died. I too was relieved and have felt guilty about that relief since then!

  12. Haha I love this! My brother had a gerbil and I was seriously terrified of it. He named it Killer, which added to the scaredness(?). One time it ran up my sleeve and I never recovered.

  13. this is the best story ever! I think you should get another rat to relive the dream :) haha When I was little I wanted newts and they ended up scaring me so bad I felt the same way when they escaped from their cage and dried up and died. RELIVED! I was sad and felt horrible, but relived they were in a better place!
