The Curse of Skinny

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

Before I start let me just tell you, it's NOT as glamorous as it sounds. It's really just a big pain in the butt. I have the hardest time gaining weight. I'm not trying to be a huge body builder or anything but I'd like to have a little more meat on my bones. Is that too much to ask for? An extra 15 pounds would do me some good!

Ever since I can remember I have been tiny. I could eat whatever I wanted and not gain an ounce. My weight was always pretty steady though. In the past year since I have been having some heart and endometriosis problems it's like weight melts off of me like butter. I have to fight to try to maintain my weight. I haven't had much of an appetite so that makes things even harder. I've been  about 115 pounds since high school but recently I am barely holding onto 106. I know that might not sound like a huge difference but 10 pounds makes a huge difference at my size.

So here's my plan. I'm documenting this in my blog so I hold myself accountable. This year is the year for healthy weight gain.  By the end of 2013 I want to be a steady 120 pounds. That is a pretty healthy weight for a 22 year old girl that's 5'7. Right?

Goodbye skinny, hello healthy!!

  1. Hi. I would trade you because I am in the opposite place. No matter what I do lately I just gain weight.

  2. I completely understand where you're coming from. I was the same way until I had my children! Now, I'm at a healthy weight for my size (I'm only 5'4) and love it. Good luck with your goal and I hope you accomplish it before this year is over!

  6. well i can't say i have ever struggled in this particular area. in fact, i daily fight the opposite fight. i actually just recently worked my way down from 120 to 105. BUT i am 5 whole inches shorter than you and it definitely wasn't as cute on me as it would be on you! i hope you have nothing but good luck with this! again, i don't know this particular struggle, but i TOTALLY understand the emotion and frustration related to weight. i have faith in you! and be sure to remember to gain good weight! (i know a girl that is trying to gain weight so she can get pregnant and all she eats is total crap. like Little Debbies by the box and candy by the bag and ice cream all the time and an entire box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts in a day) but the truth is, once you create a fat cell, you cannot very easily get rid of it. you can only shrink it. and the more fat cells you have the harder it is to lose weight. mostly i'm just telling you this because i wish i had the balls to tell this other girl that if her hormones or metabolism ever change and she ends up in a position where she needs to lose weight-she will be screwed. i'll stop writing a book now. GOOD LUCK! You're awesome! :)

  8. You go girl! If there's one thing I use as an argument against my friends (who think I'm skinny enough) is that there is a difference between skinny fat, and skinny FIT! I want to be skinny fit. I'm 120... but 5'2". So I could do with a little less fat and little more muscle or leanness. My husband is obsessed with learning about being healthy and eating good fats and lots of weight gaining/muscle building protein, so that is really helpful for me! You can do it!

  9. I have a really similar situation! I feel so embarrassed about my weight, it seems to be all anyone comments about me these days. I swear it's harder to put on weight than it is to loose it. I want my boobs back!

  11. On my step-dad's family, a lot of them struggle with this! and I have to admit, watching them eat without gaining gets me a little jealous. But I've also seen how hard it can be. One of my cousins had a really hard time growing up because kids would call her anorexic and stuff. It was really hard to see her have to deal with it. But anyway, you can do it girl :)

  12. DUDE!!!! I used to be this way in high school. Then when I got pregnant and had to have an emerg c-section, it all went down hill.
But I feel your pain. People asked me daily if I was anorexic! It was ridiculous!! I even once had a friend in the middle of lunch (after I'd just scarfed down like everything and then some) ask to see my teeth to look for proof of anorexia! I was like ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Ugh. Made me so mad! People. Psht.

  13. I thought I was alone.. I am 5'8 and I have a hard time gaining weight. I eat a lot (ask my friends and family haha) but it's so hard to gain. I'm at like 120 but would like to gain 5 more pounds. I want to gain some more muscle too. I hear "Do you eat?", "You need to eat more so you can get some meat on your bones" a lot... I'm just like thanks for calling me anorexic but I eat ALL the time! (I don't really say that to them)
Although it can be a pain, I do like being able to eat whatever I want! :)

  15. i used to have that same problem. and now i wish that i had the same problem.
once i got out of high school i hit puberty and wham!
what i noticed helps is eating small meals, and lots of them.
my husband actually has type 1 diabetes and has a really hard time gaining weight (he is 6'0'' and weighs in around 140) so we've been working on him gaining weight.

my suggestions would be start weight lifting. excersing is good, but it might make you get slimmer, however weight lifting can help to bulk you up a little bit along with getting enough protein.

wish i had this problem, but i no longer do, sad. but i do know how you feel.
people always made fun of me for it.

    good luck cute girl!

  17. Hey girl! In high school I was the same way, I could gain weight to save my life so I ate whatever I wanted and barely worked out. Now I have to workout and watch what I need. Lots of protein and starch would be good.

  18. I am the same way!
Of course I can't say, oh no, I'm too skinny, because no one wants to hear that. So I tell my husband. I literally said this to him yesterday
Me-"B, my jeans are too big"
Hubs-"whoa, yeah they are super baggy"
Me-"They're Double Zeros, I can't get them any smaller"
Hubs-"Better not say that too loud, chicks will jump you"
I'm 5'4" and I'd guess I weigh right around 100 lbs right now. I am gluten intolerant and lactose intolerant so I eat a lot of lean proteins and veggies, but lately I've been losing weight and, obviously, my pants don't fit.
Anyways, you're the first real person I've been able to sympathize with! And THAT is exciting!
    Good luck gaining weight!!! :))

  20. Kel! I love that you write about real stuff! I am with ya! This year, we want to have another baby and I NEED to gain some weight before I get pregnant. When I was pregnant with Jax I lost a ton of weight and I am about 20 pounds smaller than I was when I got pregnant with him- so losing a ton of weight with the next baby would NOT be healthy! Keep us updated with tips! :)

  22. Ugh. That was me in high school and college, then my late 20's came and my metabolism went. But just the metabolism for my bottom half. Yep, my butt is ballooning at an alarming rate while I can still slide a man's watch up to my armpit. Long story short: you might not have this problem your whole life so enjoy your butt now while you still only have TWO cheeks.

  23. I can totally relate. I've struggled with being "too skinny" my whole life and have spent years (middle school and most of h.s.) feeling awkward because of it. But within the last few years I've realized that this is me and this is my body and I'm healthy. I still notice if I lose any weight (from being sick or something) and try to put it back on to maintain my normal weight :) You can do it! Great advice in the comments above about what to eat and what not to eat (ie sugars and junk). I've found that I actually gain healthy weight when I exercise more because it makes me hungrier! And you build muscles. Good luck!

  24. Wen I first read this I thought something along the lines of I wish I had her problems. Then I thought, weight is such a personal issue, and I genuinely hope she work her way through it and feels happy in her own skin. Who I am to judge what problems are legitimately bothering someone and which ones deserve compassions. And so, I wish you the best of luck!

  25. WOW and here I was thinking I was the only one! I'm 5'8"... 105 pounds soaking wet. I eat anything and everything in site and rarely do anyting physical. Most people would kill to have our genes. You see all these new years resolutions to lose weight and you'd never think for some people it could be just as hard to gain it!

  26. I completely understand! I am the same way and I'm short. Being tiny can really suck, and finding clothes in a 0 or 00 or smaller is hard too! Grrr.. good luck gaining weight i need to do the same thing! :)
