Blogging Pros and Cons

Thursday, November 15, 2012

This post was inspired by my pal, Sierra. If you don't read her blog already, you should seriously check it out. Sierra and I met in the Fall of 2008 during our freshman year of college. You will love her, trust me.

I have loved getting into blogging. It is a great hobby for me, and writing out my thoughts is a huge release! Since dipping my toes into the blogging world there are a few things I still don't understand.

Spam Detection Boxes
What is the blob in the middle suppose to be? It looks more like a fibroblast than a letter to me.

Why are there so many social media outlets? I understand the basic ones but why do we need google friend connect, wordpress, google plus, blogger, google reader, hellocotton, and blog lovin just to read a blog?

Heaven forbid you ask someone with more followers than you to swap ads. You're just waiting to all hell to break loose.

"F4F" bloggers. What is the point of having a blog if all you do is try to et as many people as you can to follow it but they don't even read it.

I've been to some blogs that I can't even find a single real blog post. The whole site is littered in linkups, giveaways, guest posts, and feature posts.

On a more positive note. I really do love blogging. I have met some amazing women who I can connect and relate to and that has been a huge blessings. It is also a super easy way for me to communicate what's going on in my life with friends and family all over the world. Most importantly, I can write and get my thoughts and emotions out.

What are your opinions on these things? What are your pros and cons to blogging? I'd love to hear from you!

  1. Well, I'm very new to the blogging scene but I'm loving it so far! I have so many hobbies and thoughts, so I didn't make a blog so long because I felt like I had to come up with a 'theme' BUT the beauty is, its allowed to be a little bit of everything! It is already becoming a therapeutic outlet for me as well :)

    1. So true! I always struggle to come up with an answer when people ask what my Blog's theme is. Random thoughts? Things I like? Things I encounter...? :)

  2. I agree with you about the spam detection box. Super annoying.

  3. I love how Sierra inspired us! I totally know what you mean about sometimes not being able to find a real blog post. Crazy!

  4. I wish blogging didn't feel like such a popularity contest. We should help each other out as much as we can, especially since many of us blog in order to connect to someone who understands us.

And yes, I HATE the word verifications. But it's either use that or manually moderate all comments. There have been times, though, that I literally can't comment on someone's blog because I can't get through the filter!

  6. Spam detection boxes keep me from commenting about 80% of the time. And yes, I'd love just one way of following blogs, having to check my GFC and bloglovin is a bit much for me. It's like having to check myspace AND facebook. That didn't last! I'm fairly new to blogging, but I am a little irked by the F4F bloggers. It seems like they're just trying to gain followers to get sway. LAME. Enjoyed this post, it's like you said everything on my mind!

  7. I'm new to blogging and I love it, but I am amazed at how easy it is to get caught up in the numbers game. I want my blog to be for me, not just for the mass of followers! I have so many of the same blogging "pet peeves"!

  10. hahaha you are so funny! I have never asked someone to swap adds because I am scared they will deny me! I have no idea how all the stuff works...I will swap ads with you though!! I need to make one. Also...those word verification things...I hate them! I fail them all the time!

  11. These were great to read! like you I don't get most of these things. What's the point of follow for follow? Don't you want the people who "follow" your blog to actually read it and connect with you? maybe I'm missing something here!

also spam detection boxes. So annoying. I swear they get harder and harder to read every few weeks!

  12. the captcha stuff i am about ready to boycott blogs that make me type in a silly non-word and try and make out some silly numbers my eyes will go bad with all the straining they have to do to try and make out the numbers and letter even somewhat

  13. Found this on another blog and all I can say is AMEN. I'd rather have 100 people reading my blog than 1,500 following it. That is one reason I haven't started sponsorship on my blog yet, I don't feel like I'm "there" or respected as a blogger ya know? Anywho, I'm following you now...because I like your blog =)

  14. I hate it when girls do link-ups and giveaways for every post. Every once and while, sure. But where's the creativity in that? I agree with most of these, for sure. But I always say yes to people who want to swap buttons with me :)

  20. okay, you are SO right! captcha will never make sense to me, swapping ads is really hard for new bloggers like myself, and sometimes it feels like a little "clique" or something. F4F is kind of pointless in my opinion. of course i want more followers, but not if they don't actually want to follow me and read my blog.

overall, though, i LOVE blogging. it's a great creative outlet, a way to connect with people all over the world and share your thoughts and lives--open yourself to new ideas. but i do wish the popularity contest would stop.

(ps. found you through Dearest Lou, you and your man are adorable!)
(pps. how do you remove the captcha spam boxes from your blog? i'm lost...)

    1. Hmm I'm not sure. I don't think I ever had captcha on my blog. I thought you had to put it on there yourself. I bet it would be fairly easy to google and find out though.

Blogging definitely is a creative outlet, and that's why I love it too! Such a fun hobby.

      Thank you so much!

  21. haha! This is great :P This might seem obvious, but I'd say most of my pros & cons {when it comes to other blogs} have been the bloggers themselves. And really it doesn't always have to do with how "popular" they are. My favorite bloggers are the ones who seem truly genuine & actually respond to a comment or too lol. On the flip side the bloggers that frustrate me the most are the ones who clearly just blog to get more followers {eg you see that they're following every blog you ever click on, every other post is about sponsoring them, link ups, and maybe a couple actual posts} lol. Not that I don't do my own link ups... but yes, my blog is MAINLY my way to express myself and share my life, projects, food, etc. Anyways, I think I've said plenty here haha... love the post ;)

  24. Hey Kelsey! I completely agree with everything you said; hate the spam boxes i usually have to change it like 3 times and still have to guess what it is, how many ways to follow and then you have to remember your log in and password for everything AH!!
I don't even know what F4F bloggers is lol, I try not to make my blog too complicated because I usually don't have much time to be online in the first place.
( new follower by the way :)

  25. Totally agree, drives me crazy when you can't find a real post on a blog.

  26. This post is fantastic. 4F4 bloggers can be really annoying...I just recently went through my blogroll and stopped following any blog I don't either sponsor or regularly read. Half the point of blogging is the community, so what's the point? Sure, it's nice to have a lot of followers, but I'd rather have 10 followers who actually read my blog than 10,000 who don't.
And those little spam boxes are the death of me. I can never get it right. Is it just me or are the ones on blogger even harder than any other one on the web?

  27. haha - this may accurately summarize many of my feelings about blogging :)

  28. Hey, I've seen your ad around several blogs I read and decided to stop by. I'm loving your blog and looking forward to being your newest follower. I love this post. I am definitely guilty of some of these things. It's hard to balance growing your blog with staying true to yourself and the reason you started blogging. It's something I'm struggling with as my blog is growing. I'd have to say my biggest pet peeve of blogging is when someone makes no comment on what your wrote (do they even read the post?) and simply say "new follower. follow back?" um...no thanks!

    1. Well I am so glad you stopped by! I just figure it's worth it to write about what you feel passionate about and not sell yourself short. It's the whole reason why we all started blogs in the first place, right? :)
Oh and that drives me nuts too. There are some blogs I read religiously and comment on all the time and I'm not even sure they know who I am, haha!
